Crypto Market Today
Updated 7 October 2026
The crypto market today is best read as a set of moving parts, not a single number. This page explains what each part means, so you can look at the figures on any given day and understand what is actually driving them.
Below you will find a plain English guide to market cap, dominance, funding rates and sentiment, plus the reasons crypto most often rises or falls in a 24 hour window. Live prices and charts are coming soon.
What "the crypto market today" actually measures
When people say the market is up or down, they usually mean total market capitalisation: the combined value of every tracked coin, calculated as price multiplied by circulating supply. It is a rough figure rather than an exact one, because supply counts vary between data providers and some tokens trade thinly.
Total market cap tells you the direction of travel. It does not tell you who moved. For that you need dominance.
Bitcoin dominance and what it signals
Dominance is Bitcoin's share of total market cap, expressed as a percentage. It moves for two reasons: Bitcoin's own price, and the price of everything else.
- Rising dominance usually means money is sitting in Bitcoin and avoiding smaller tokens, often during nervous periods.
- Falling dominance usually means capital is spreading into altcoins, sometimes called an altseason when it runs for a while.
- Flat dominance with a rising total market cap means the whole market is moving together.
Dominance is a ratio, so it can rise even when Bitcoin falls, as long as altcoins fall faster. Read it alongside price, never on its own.
Funding rates, open interest and leverage
Perpetual futures never expire, so exchanges use a funding rate to keep the contract price close to spot. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts. When it is negative, shorts pay longs.
Very high positive funding is a warning sign. It means traders are crowded long and paying to stay there. A small move down can trigger liquidations, which push prices further down, which triggers more liquidations. The same works in reverse when funding is deeply negative.
Open interest, the total value of outstanding futures contracts, adds context. Rising open interest with rising price suggests new money is entering. Rising open interest with falling price suggests shorts are building.
Fear and Greed, and other sentiment gauges
The Fear and Greed Index scores sentiment from 0 to 100 using volatility, momentum, trading volume and social data. It is a sentiment measure, not a forecast. Extreme fear has often appeared near local lows and extreme greed near local highs, but the index can stay extreme for weeks.
Treat it as a description of the crowd, not a signal on its own.
Why is crypto down today? Common reasons
Most single day drops trace back to one or more of the following:
- Macro data or central bank commentary that shifts expectations for interest rates. Crypto trades as a risk asset, so tighter money usually pressures prices.
- Liquidations in the derivatives market, which amplify moves in both directions.
- Regulatory news, enforcement action or exchange problems.
- Large transfers or sales by major holders, real or rumoured.
- Bitcoin weakness dragging the wider market with it, given its weight in total market cap.
- Thin weekend or holiday liquidity, which makes ordinary orders move prices further than usual.
The same list explains up days, just in reverse. Rate cuts, ETF inflows, exchange listings and short squeezes all push prices higher.
How to read the day in five minutes
| Check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Total market cap, 24h change | Overall direction |
| Bitcoin dominance | Whether money favours Bitcoin or altcoins |
| Funding rates | Whether leverage is crowded long or short |
| Fear and Greed | Crowd mood |
| Macro calendar | Whether a scheduled event is likely to move prices |
If those five agree, the move usually has a clear cause. If they conflict, the market is undecided and the move is more likely to be noise.

FAQs
What is the crypto market cap today?
It is the total value of all tracked cryptocurrencies, calculated as price multiplied by circulating supply. Live figures are coming soon; until then, check a market data provider.
Why is crypto down today?
The usual causes are macro news affecting interest rate expectations, a wave of leveraged liquidations, regulatory headlines, or Bitcoin weakness pulling the wider market down. The list above covers the most common drivers.
What is a normal funding rate?
Rates hover near zero in balanced markets. Mildly positive funding is normal in an uptrend. Unusually high or persistently negative funding signals crowded positioning and raises the risk of a sharp move.
Does Bitcoin dominance predict altcoin prices?
No. It describes where capital is sitting relative to Bitcoin. Falling dominance often accompanies altcoin strength, but it is a description of the past day, not a forecast.
